Rough grading, finish grading, cut-and-fill, lot leveling and dirt hauling , turning raw or rough ground into a buildable, drainable site.
Before anything gets built, the ground has to be made ready. Grading and site prep is the shaping work that takes a raw parcel, a rough lot or a tired yard and turns it into a site that's level where it needs to be, sloped where it needs to be, and draining the way it should. It's the stage that sets up every other trade for success , or sets them up to fight the site the whole way.
JH Excavation handles grading and site preparation of every size across Powell, Cody, Ralston and the Big Horn Basin. We cut, fill, shape and haul to establish the grades your project calls for, always with an eye on the one thing that quietly ruins sites out here: water and where it goes.
From prepping a single building lot to shaping an entire new-construction site, we bring the iron and the judgment to move material efficiently and leave you ground you can build on with confidence.
- Rough grading and site shaping for new construction
- Finish grading to tolerance for slabs, gravel and landscaping
- Cut-and-fill and lot leveling
- Positive drainage, swales and slope correction
- Building-lot preparation and clearing to grade
- Import of structural fill, topsoil and gravel
- Haul-off of excess dirt, spoil and debris
Rough Grading & Cut-And-Fill
Rough grading is the heavy shaping , cutting down the high spots, filling the low ones, and establishing the general contours and elevations a project needs. On sloped or uneven ground it's a balancing act of moving material from where there's too much to where there's too little, ideally balancing cut and fill on site to keep hauling costs down.
We read the site first: where water wants to flow, where the building sits, how the finished grades need to tie into driveways, neighbors and the county road. Then we move dirt with a plan, not just a bucket.
Finish Grading & Lot Leveling
Finish grading is the precise final shaping that gets a site ready for its surface , concrete, gravel, sod, seed or landscaping. Tolerances tighten up here; a finish grade that's off shows up as ponding water, a slab that sits wrong, or a lawn that won't drain. We smooth, level and slope to the final numbers so the next phase goes down clean.
Lot leveling is common work on both new builds and existing properties , taking a rough or lumpy lot and making it usable, level where you want it and gently pitched where water needs to leave.
Drainage & Dirt Hauling
Positive drainage is the thread running through everything we grade. Wyoming doesn't get much rain, but snowmelt and the occasional hard downpour find every low spot and lazy slope. We build in the swales, slopes and contours that carry water away from buildings and off the site the way you want it to go.
When a job produces more material than it needs , or needs material brought in , we handle the hauling. Excess dirt, spoil and debris go out; structural fill, topsoil and gravel come in. One crew, one number, material moving in the right direction.
Questions About Grading & Site Prep
What's the difference between rough and finish grading?
Rough grading is the heavy shaping , establishing the general elevations and contours by cutting and filling. Finish grading is the precise final pass that gets the site ready for its surface, held to tighter tolerances so water drains and the next phase goes down right. Many projects need both.
Can you fix drainage problems in my yard or lot?
Often, yes. A lot of drainage trouble comes down to grade , water pooling because the ground slopes the wrong way or has no path out. We can reshape the grade, cut in swales and re-establish positive drainage away from your buildings. We'll look at the site and tell you honestly what it needs.
Do you haul dirt in and out?
Yes. We haul off excess material and bring in structural fill, topsoil or gravel as the job requires. Handling it in-house keeps your project on one schedule and one point of contact.
